Yaali

  • Planet Yaal contains the only native species to the Valorik Sectork: the Yaali
  • However, if they themselves are to be believed, they are not natives at all
  • In their language, Yaal means “colony” and Yaali means “colonists”
  • All Yaali insist they are colonists that immigrated to Yaal from another world
  • However, the Yaali have never been seen anywhere but the planet Yaal, and there is no
evidence that they even possess space-faring technology
  • However, when the first survey team arrived on the planet and accidentally discovered the Yaali
they did not seem surprised to see off-worlders at all
  • Although they do not use advanced technology in any form (ships, speeders, weapons) they
seem perfectly comfortable being around it, and even seem to have a solid understanding of it
  • The total population of Yaali is unknown since no one has seen the one central settlement the Yaali claim exists
  • Mysteriously, all attempts to scan the surface for the city have failed and speeder survey teams have either found nothing, or never returned
  • The Yaali are a simple, agrarian, people using hand-made tools and beasts of burden to do their
    work
  • Physically, they are very similar to humans, except they appear to have incredible agility and
    range of motion
  • Their arms have an additional joint and all arm joints can bend equally well in both directions
  • Their methods of farming are entirely different from elsewhere in the galaxy, but seem ideally
suited to the growing conditions of Yaal
  • Almost certainly as a result of this, in addition to their aversion to technological tools, the
foodstuffs produced by the Yaali are the best to be found in the Sector and possibly the entire
    Outer Rim
  • Every year when the Yaali have their Harvest, hundreds (if not thousands) of ships descend on
the tiny planet to gather what portions of the Harvest are permitted to be sold to off-worlders
  • The rules of Yaali society are enforced by an apparent “Priest” class call the Ka’sar, which
    means “Keepers” in their language
  • The Ka’sar can be easily spotted by the distinctive red robes that they wear
  • During the Harvest, the Ka’sar serve the all-important role of collecting the sar, which
    translates directly to “the keeping”
  • Observers have noted that exactly one-fifth of the produce from every community is given as
the sar, which is collected by the Ka’sar every year
  • The sar is not available for sale to off-worlders, and doesn’t appear to even be consumed by the Yaali
  • The giving of the sar by each community appears to have religious significance to the Yaali, as each community always gives the best fifth of its food as the sar
  • Yaali do not speak about their customs much to off-worlders, but what information has been
discerned is that the sar is being saved for delivery back to their home planet
  • In the entire history of contact with the Yaali, no ship has ever been seen collecting the sar
  • Only one attempt by off-worlders has ever been made to steal the sar from the Ka’sar
  • The perpetrators were killed savagely and their remains put on display in the Yaal “Starport” (a glorified landing field)
  • The Ka’sar, in a rare direct communication to off-worlders, made it clear that any further
attempts to seize the sar would result in the Yaali Harvets being closed to off-worlders
  • During the Harvest, foodstuffs from the numerous scattered Yaali communities are brought to
central “marketplaces” where off-worlders may bid on their purchase in an “auction-house”
    style
  • The Yaali have no use for Credits, so purchasing food from the Harvest is always done in a
    barter style
  • Despite their “quaint” ways, Yaali and shrewd and cunning bargainers and many off-worlders
have learned the lesson of underestimating them
  • Yaali customs insist that all purchasing be done in a face-to-face open market format, with the
details of each purchase negotiated at the time of purchase
  • This style has effectively eliminated large corporations from dominating the purchasing process and opened fantastic opportunities for individual brokers and free traders to make a living
  • The Yaali Harvest has become an annual “event” for cargo pilots throughout the sector
